GE has said it will hire 1,000 veterans a year for five years, and it has nearly met its goal for the first year, said GE spokesman Michael Tresca.
"We're at 900. We're on track to hiring 1,000 for 2012," he said. "We're also doing job transition workshops across the country where veterans can talk with veterans who work at GE. We're doing 40 this year."
Working with major corporations like Alcoa, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, GE also is co-sponsoring the "Get Skills to Work" effort. The program, with community colleges across the country, kicks off this month.
