Review of the Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games
Christopher T. Connor reviewed The Evolution of Fantasy Role-Playing Games in The Journal of Popular Culture, Volume 46, Issue 1, pages 221–222, February 2013:Ultimately Tresca's book is a strong supplementary text for exploring role-playing games and online interactions. It provides a concise balanced summary of the history of role-playing games, while also spending time analyzing the shift to online role-playing games. Despite the lack of a strong analytical edge, Tresca manages to provide some interesting insights for how online games work. His emphasis on the role of anonymity and limited availability for using non verbal cues provides keen insight into online role-playing games if not all online interactions.
